I had the pleasure of working on a new series of videos called Beer Rants for Drake’s Brewing. It feature John Gillooly, brewmaster and defacto spokesperson for the company. John has a tremendous amount of experience, knowledge, and passion for brewing. Thankfully, he’s also not shy about sharing strong opinions. Beer Rants was designed to harness all of those wonderful qualities. I hope the results inspire and educate beer lovers.
Creating this series was a new technical challenge. I’ve dabbled in documentary video, but never something this complex. In order to keep it engaging, I used multiple cameras, added b-roll, and recorded high quality audio. I also tried to inject a little humor. Not surprisingly, there was a learning curve to meet my ambition. The time was worth the investment. I also enjoyed having control over every aspect of the production, from capturing footage, to editing, and color grading.
The first episode of Beer Rants features 1500 Pale Ale. It was published on YouTube today, and the series will also be available on Instagram. Moving forward, episodes will focus on beer releases, ingredients, trends, history, and stories. Over time we might shift the content if John is itching to rant about something else. I’m going to do my best to keep the episode length below five minutes. Every new video should become a little more polished and refined as I pick up new skills, knowledge, and expand my creativity.
