California’s first brewery was opened by Adam Schuppert in 1849, at the corner of Stockton and Jackson Streets in San Francisco. Thirsty Gold Rush miners were pouring into the city and many brewers filled the void. Since then a large number of breweries have come and gone, many at the hands of the 1906 earthquake and fire, Prohibition from 1920-33, and a long period of brewery consolidation in the mid 20th century.
