I’ve been cobbling together a small collection of vintage postcards from the pre-prohibition era to the 1960’s and decided to launch a new series called Beer Funnies. The cards range from political satire to simple frat boy humor while offering insights into the moral dimensions of each era, touching on acceptable behavior, stereotypes, sexism, and racism. In addition, it’s interesting to see how the cultural context of where, when, and how we consume copious amounts of alcohol has shifted over time.
The first installment resides in the timeless category of drunken stupidity and appears to be from the pre-prohibition era. I love how the sender decided to append the caption by writing “and hope you are doing the same.”
